The 2008 RASC TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2008 RASC TT's concluded on Tuesday evening. We had pretty good weather for all the races, but a little road construction changed things up for TT #3 on the 18.9 mile course. Other than that, I think they were a success. If it weren't for Jeremy Ekman crunching the numbers and creating such an intricate timing spreadsheet, it would have been all chicken scratches on paper from me....

The top finishers can be found HERE. If you follow the links, you can see all the people that raced.

Rochester Half Marathon

Saturday, August 23, 2008-- It was the longest run I've ever done: 13.1 miles. Back in May I jogged 10.5, but since then I've been doing 6-7 miles once or twice a week along with shorter runs. I felt great the whole run--I could have been moving a little faster, but didn't want to bonk and had no idea what I would feel like at the half way point. It was an out and back so after the turnaround, I picked up the pace just a little bit. Starting mile 12 I kicked it down a little more but then I paid for it in the last 1,2 miles. I should have only turned it up a few seconds, but tried to test myself. Needless to say after it was over and I had a chance to sit down for a couple minutes, the legs got a little stiff and my right knee totally froze up. I'm ok now. After a little ice, some recovery massage cream, plenty of water, and a mile or two of walking, I can still tell I ran, but feel pretty good...

I finished in 1:26:41. That's a 6:38 pace. I'm plenty happy with that time. They have me at 1:26:31, but I had my HRM going from start to finish so even though the extra 10 seconds look better, I know what I ran. The winner in 1:11:16 (and course record holder with 1:08 and some change) was Pete Gilman. For complete results, click THIS.

PHELPS and the Olympics

Ok, I was starting to get sick of hearing all the hype about Michael Phelps. I watched the Team Relay and it was Lezak who sealed the deal. I also saw Perisol (the surfer lookin' slacker type) kick some butt and take gold. Grievers got silver. These other swimmers sort of live in the shadow of Phelps. Phelps receives all the press. The Powerbar commercials, the Morgan Freeman voice over commercials, etc.... HOWEVER, I now understand the hype. The womens gymnastics team has been faced with some problems... but here comes Phelps. After putting in a solid performance in the pool, of course, winning another gold, he filled in for the ladies. He laid down a sweet score in the womens vault. (He has also taken Hamm's place on the mens gym team.) After killing the vault, he hopped off the mat, ran outside in his speedo and broke the record in the shot put--pressed for time he threw two at once! Since Phelps had an old road bike with him he decided to enter the mens road race. He started last night--he knew it was already finished, but he rode so freakin' fast that he actually went back in time to the weekend and took silver (would have gotten gold but he broke a pedal and had to sprint it out with just one leg). I don't know how, but he fixed the pedal and even posted the bike for sale on craigs list yesterday out of his Chicago address: chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/bi...72.html . Look a little closer at the womens sand beach volley ball team-- is that REALLY Kerri Walsh? No one has ever seen Phelps and Walsh in the same room at the same time. Also, with Phelps' height, he is being looked at by the USA B-ball squad. However, Phelps wants gold in B-ball and weight lifting, but the schedules were conflicting--I don't know what he decided. The question is, will he have enough left to sweep the podium in the mens mountain bike race on the final days of the Games? In the next Olympics Phelps' uniform will read: PHELPS, with PHELPS under that. His last name and country will be the same as "Phelps, Earth", will be its own country by then. Rumor has it, Phelps is swimming back to the USA from China.

Training Re-cap

Saturday, August 2, 2008: Did the long, 130 mile, ride from Kasson to Sherburne (near Fairmont). Almost the identical stats as when I did it in 2006. However, time out was about 15 minutes longer, but the actual ride time on the bike was within a minute of '06. Since I haven't done any rides nearly that long this summer (non over 50 miles), it was a little tough, but I recovered just fine, which leads to the Tuesday night RASC TT.

Tuesday, August 5, 2008: Did the RASC TT, 19 miles, on the Treadman loop and logged the fastest time of the night at 46:12, av speed of 24.5. Not sure that is going to be the fastest time on that route as Mark Carey was still recovering from a 12 mtb race from a few days earlier. During the Treadman Du a couple years ago he posted a time 45 min and some change.

Saturday, August 9, 2008: I did the Festival Run 10k--I was looking foward to this all summer. Not trying to peak for it, but I wanted to run it in 38 something. I guess with the TT earlier in the week, and some running surge intervals two days prior, I was not in the best form, but for me I had a good race. I placed 2nd overall with a time of 39:03--just 4 seconds and I would have been in the 38's. Oh, well. Winner was Nick Payne with a time of 37:02- WOW!! That's a pretty good time for a 10k--now throw in the hills that beat you down on the second half and that's an awesome time.

It's R & R week now.... Well, besides the RASC TT tomorrow evening.
